KidLit Chuckle Challenge - Picture Book Feature 3

Dates: Sept 22-24, 2024

I am featuring some of my favorite humorous picture books as we lead up to the KidLit Chuckle Challenge!

Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen are picture book humor legends and "Sam and Dave Dig a Hole" is one of my favorites!

This book has a very distinct type of humor - one that relies on a certain kind of dramatic irony, of cheekiness, and of juxtaposition in words and art.

The book's humor comes also comes from using the same joke over and over again, but the trick is that it builds up throughout the book and it does NOT get old.

The ending of this book is also such a shock and a surprise that you can't help but laugh. I don't think anyone could guess what happens the first time they read it, and they may need to go back and reread it to fully appreciate the ending (never a bad thing).

Why this book is funny: Dramatic irony, build-up, zany ending.

Are you joining the KidLit Chuckle Challenge? Maybe you can think about using dramatic irony to build humor.
