What is a Picture Book? - Character

Picture books are for kids, and so with very few exceptions, the character in the story should be a kid. If it is not a kid, say it's a bear, then that bear should be kid-like, or have characteristics of a kid.

Why?

Because we want the audience to be able to relate to the character.

Great examples: Mo Willems - everything especially the "Pigeon" series for an example of a nonhuman child like character.

"Milo Imagines the World" is a stunning example of a kid character and how they see the world.

Even when the character is technically an adult like the Amelia Bedelia series, Amelia acted very child-like.

Read some picture books - study the characters. Who are they? How do they act? What are they curious about? What does their voice sound like?

Happy writing!
